The standard specifies requirements for materials and clothing used to protect workers against the thermal hazards of electric arc.
It does not cover protection of the head, hands and feet, nor other than thermal hazards such as electric shock, noise, UV emissions, molten metal fragments, or toxic influences.
Dangers of electric arc :
The electric arc produces bright light and intense heat, with lethal potential due to the severe burns it can cause (1 to 000°C).
It also presents other serious hazards such as intense light, pressure wave, loud noise (up to 165 dB) and toxic fumes.
Performance reading :
Personal protective equipment (PPE) conforming to the IEC 61482-2 standard is classified into two categories:
- Class 1: Tested compliant with 4 amp arc.
- Class 2: Tested compliant with 7 amp arc.
The tests verify the absence of flame propagation, the absence of heat transfer that could cause second-degree burns, and the proper functioning of the PPE closure systems after the tests.
