The use of the belt is already widespread among firefighters before 1900. At that time, its function is practically the same as that which we know today: to secure yourself on a ladder. For this, the belt of the time was equipped with a snap-on device which made it possible to attach directly to a rung and this without carabiner or cord. The version with ring and carabiner will become widespread thereafter. The belt for firefighters was initially made up of a flexible woven part, the
more often in hemp. It was connected on both sides to two more rigid parts, in leather, which formed the closing system. This system was equipped with two to three straps fitted with individual buckle clasps. We will have to wait for the arrival on the market of synthetic fibers as well
than the technological evolution of metals to see a change in the manufacture of belts. The leather parts will then disappear and the multi-buckle closures will be replaced by single buckle or snap or pinch closures. This is the beginning of the "orange belt". If these developments appear on the market at the end of the
60s and early 70s, it will still be necessary to wait before seeing them enter into service with the fire brigade, for obvious cost reasons.
