What are the possible causes of a forest fire?
Forest fires break out mainly in summer because of the drought, the lack of water experienced by the plants and the heavy use of wooded areas.
Several causes of forest fires exist, including original fires:
- Natural due to drought, high heat, lightning, etc. ;
- human which may have arrived accidentally (cigarette butt badly extinguished, barbecue, work, etc.) or on purpose.
Operational resources:
On a daily basis, firefighters, civil security units, Météo-France, among others, analyze the risks of forest fires and put in place preventive mobilization of intervention resources.
For emergency services to be the most effective in fighting forest fires, they must intervene quickly to prevent the area of the fire from becoming too large.
In France, many means are planned to fight against forest fires. This makes it possible to limit the number of large fires.
Civil security instruction and intervention units (UIISC) are military units.
The main tools for forest fires:
La bat is a long-handled tool with a rubber flap that is used to extinguish or control small fires in grasses and meadows. The bat cuts off the oxygen supply to a fire. The concept originates from the natives, who used green pine branches to smother the flames.
The pump buckets have a capacity of 18 to 20 liters is fitted with a pressure nozzle and weighs approximately 25 kg when full. It is used to put out small fires.
Commonly used tool for fighting fires, pulaski is an ax which is used to cut roots and small trees and to dig to build fire breaks and thus slow down the progression of small surface fires.
La drip torch 1L is ideal for creating backfires, lines of defense or controlled burns.
The cisterns, in areas where there is no water, firefighters use portable water tanks which are helicopter-borne.
