WHAT IS HIGH VISIBILITY WORKWEAR?

Considered as personal protective equipment (PPE), high visibility clothing can be a jacket such as a waistcoat or even pants. Almost any type of clothing can be high-visibility, the best known being the signal vest, which is compulsory in cars on public roads. These clothes make you visible from afar thanks to retro reflective bands. They are worn to help drivers and other road users quickly see a person moving close to the roadway, thereby reducing the risks associated with poor visibility.

IS IT MANDATORY?

The reflective vest is a piece of equipment listed by the Highway Code and is therefore compulsory for all drivers. In a professional or private context, any person walking near a road traffic or temporary danger zone must wear signal clothing. The latter ensures maximum visibility to its user. Indeed, the reflective bands of this type of garment are specially designed to reflect and intensify the light of vehicle headlights. In circumstances where there is no danger associated with a person's visibility, warning clothing is not compulsory.

WHAT ARE ITS CHARACTERISTICS ?

A high-visibility garment is equipped with 2 to 4 retro-reflective bands which are obtained thanks to a technology called micro-beads, these bands reflect light and can therefore be seen at more than 250 meters in order to ensure visibility and therefore the safety of the person wearing the work clothing with reflective stripes. The latter is always made of a fluorescent high-visibility material.

Visibility is defined in several classes, from 1 to 3. The classes being proportional to the risk present, the more the risk is present, the more the surface of the garment must be occupied by reflective bands. Thus a class 1 high-visibility garment will have approximately 15% of its surface covered with fluorescent material, while a class 3 garment will have 80% of its surface covered by this fluorescent textile. The update of the standard in 2013 states that "horizontal bands must surround the torso, legs and sleeves".

WHAT SANCTIONS IF YOU DON'T WEAR IT?

Not being in possession of a signal vest is considered an offense by law. During a control by the police, a driver incurs a 4th class fine. This can therefore be a point withdrawal accompanied by a fine of € 135, up to € 750.
In a professional setting, wearing a life jacket is subject to other regulations: "Anyone intervening on foot on the road during a construction site must wear high visibility class 2 or 3 signal clothing". Failure to wear a high-visibility signal vest in an environment that justifies the obligation to wear it may result in a warning or even a layoff. In the event of repeated breaches of security, the penalties may increase.
