What maintenance is required for a fire hydrant?

All fire hydrants must be implemented in accordance with the French standard NF S 62-200. For example, they meet minimum performance criteria, since they are all able to provide a flow rate of 30 to 120 cubic meters per hour for 2 hours, with a pressure of at least 1 bar (8 bars in a pressurized network).

Concretely, the Mayor must ensure that anywhere, as soon as they intervene in inhabited area, firefighters must be able to access a water point within 200 meters. This distance, according to the law of paragraph 1.3 of the national reference system for external defense against fires, is measured by "paths practicable by means of the fire and rescue services".

When in doubt, those responsible should request tests to ensure that they comply with the rules around fire hydrants in force, under penalty of sanctions. In addition, the law also obliges the territorial administrations to verify that these points are functioning correctly, with un annual check carried out by firefighters and operators.

The annual check is a an appointment that should never be waived, but other preventive measures are necessary so that firefighters can always intervene in good conditions in the event of a fire.

Regularly, we must ensure that the anti-freezing system plays its role, especially in winter. It is also necessary to check the condition of the trunk, the hardness of operation and carry out periodic oil changes while greasing some parts.
